For the Star-Ledger
Matt Toy is a prototypical forward for Bishop Eustace.
He is swift, clever with the puck and responsible in the Pennsauken school's system. He also adheres strictly to a simple team concept.
"We come into every game focusing mainly on winning shifts," said the senior from Moorestown. "We're concerned with playing defense first, then going from there. It all comes down to just playing hard every shift."
Toy can also score and create, too, as he finished with a goal and an assist and senior Kyle Van Osten stopped all 25 shots he faced when Bishop Eustace, No. 1 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, defeated No. 8 Seton Hall Prep, 4-0, yesterday in a Gordon Conference contest at Codey Arena in West Orange.
The victory was the second in as many days for Bishop Eustace (14-1), which downed No. 10 Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, 10-0, on Friday.
"They are a really, really deep team," said Seton Hall coach Peter Herms. "We tried to focus on a couple of their players in the first period, but they've got so many other guys who can hurt you."
Mark Constantine cut around a defenseman in the left circle and snapped a shot past Seton Hall goalie Jimmy Harrison (24 saves) 3:15 into the first period to give the South Jersey school a 1-0 lead before Toy followed just 13 seconds later, with Conall Guckin assisting, to extend it to 2-0.
Seton Hall, which outshot Bishop Eustace, 8-5, in the first had two chances to cut the deficit in the period, but Van Osten made sparkling saves on a slapper off the stick of Chris Fersini and a wrist shot by Anthony Leonardo.
Guckin banged in a rebound at 5:25 of the second to make it 3-0 before Chris Tracy's power-play goal with 1:09 showing in the period capped the scoring.
